The Gila Woodpecker (Melanerpes uropygialis) is listed as an Endangered Species in the state of California. Approximately 200 individuals live in native cottonwood-willow forests along the lower Colorado in California. In Arizona, these birds nest in the Saguaro Cactus, which is a plant (as shown) vital to the survival of many species of wildlife.
