While studying art history, I took a liking to the watercolors of the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde (1857 - 1956). After the Nazis took away his oil paints ordering that he no longer paint; he secretively took to watercolors. I was inspired by his loose and free flowing use of the medium. I also appreciated that despite the consequences, he continued to paint. And he left the world with a wonderful series of colorful images. These flowers are Freesias, which I grew in my organic garden. Not only do I appreciate having a place to call my garden, I appreciate the freedom that I have to paint. |
